NVIDIA has shifted focus to the higher end of its product stack with the GeForce RTX 30 “Ampere” series. The RTX 3080 has already been heralded as NVIDIA’s new “flagship” in marketing materials that also feature the MSI Gaming x trio 3090.

Like the TITAN, the RTX 3090 was also developed to break down the market segment boundaries between gaming and professional displays. This is where NVIDIA’s powerful Studio drivers come in handy. NVIDIA believes the 24GB memory amount will be helpful for developers in various use cases.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the RTX 3090 adds nothing to gaming. On the contrary, this is the SKU that NVIDIA wants to use to push the limits of 8K gaming. 8K is no joke; that’s four times the number of pixels in 4K and sixteen times the number of pixels in Full HD.
To achieve this, NVIDIA developed the new 8K DLSS feature, which uses AI and deep learning to perform 9x AI upscaling of 1440p rendering in supported games. 8K gaming monitors aren’t here yet, but target buyers for the RTX 3090 could be early adopters of 8K TVs.

NVIDIA used a common silicon for the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080, so only one type of ASIC needs to be built for this relatively small volume market segment.
